About The Album

The artists and cultural organizers who are part of Songs in the Key of Resistance are rooted in the living tradition of movement music, lifting up songs born from struggle, survival, joy, and collective dreaming. This album was made possible through the vision, commitment, and powerful artistry of the musicians, vocalists, and cultural organizers who believe in the power of song to deepen political consciousness, strengthen community, and help transform society. Their offering continues a lineage shaped by freedom songs, labor chants, protest anthems, and spirituals - carrying forward traditions that have sustained people through generations of organizing and liberation work.

More than a recording project, this album emerges from a collective of movement artists and cultural organizers committed to using music as a tool for connection, political imagination, and liberation. Each track reflects the deep relationships, histories, and shared commitments that make movement building possible. Songs in the Key of Resistance honors those who came before us and is connected to a wide web of cultural organizers who are working to build a world rooted in justice, dignity, and collective freedom.

SONGS IN THE KEY OF RESISTANCE

We chose to release this album on June 1st, a day when Sojourner Truth claimed her new name and set forth on a mission to preach the truth to a nation about its violence; to advocate against a slave system and to bring about justice, "the Spirit calls me, and I must go.” It is with this spirit that we invite those who know in their bones that love is a structure upon which our world could be built, to continue the work of organizing through song.

As Jarvis Benson, co-author of the report A Matter of Survival: Organizing to Meet Unmet Needs and Build Power in Times of Crisis reminds us,

“May we build communities where no one is left to struggle alone. And may we remember that we come from people who have always found ways to take care of each other — and to fight for more.”
